Roald Dahl is well known as a childrens author that wrote whimsical stories and created amazing fictional worlds. Some people may never think about the fact that before writing many of his great pieces, Roald Dahl actually wrote many short stories that were influenced by his traumatic and intriguing childhood; most of these stories were not as child-friendly as one might imagine. One of the most prominent examples would be in his story â€Å"Beware of the Dog†. In this story, there is a man that is in the air force who is fighting in World War 2 and lost a leg in a plane crash, due to being shot down. This story was also published a round the time that World War 2 was coming to an end, so everything that happened in the story was still relevant and fresh in peoples minds. Many people were still probably not over the fear that such a war brings to people. The connection between his past and his stories also are prominent in his longer pieces, which also happen to be more well known. Most people are familiar with the story â€Å"Matilda†, about the intelligent little girl with special powers who is defiant of her schools tyrant principal, Ms. Trunchbull. There is a common thread in many of his stories--abusive teachers and adults. This was due to the private schools he attended which practiced corporal punishment (Hathhock). This aspect of his childhood seems to play a role in many of his pieces of literature. There also seems to be many other small references to his childhood in his short stories. For example, when he was 3 years his father died of pneumonia; he worked as a shipbroker (ROALD).
